The New 2.7L V6 Ford Ranger Takes On the World’s Toughest Towing Test!

We finally have the chance to test the mid-range 2.7-liter EcoBoost in the new 2024 Ford Ranger.
When the Ford Ranger returned to the U.S. back in 2019, the only powertrain we could get our hands on was the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. How things have changed with this new truck, as we now get the high-performance 3.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Raptor as well, which we’ve tested extensively over the past few months. One truck we haven’t yet been able to test, however, is the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 that was supposed to launch late last summer with the rest of the lineup. It’s finally made its way onto the market, and after our initial first look video, we have the opportunity to test the mid-range engine up and down the Ike Gauntlet.
With 315 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque on tap, the 2.7L EcoBoost adds a $2,195 premium above and beyond the base four-cylinder. You get 45 more horses and 90 lb-ft more torque in the process, so the question we’re aiming to answer here (much like many of you) is a straightforward one: Is the extra grunt worth the extra cash?
On the surface, at least, you get a similar level of towing capability with both engines. Provided you pick up a new Ranger with the available towing package with a Class IV hitch, both the 2.3L and the 2.7L are rated to tow up to 7,500 pounds.
As to whether or not the extra cost is worth it, that isn’t the only number that factors in, of course. It’s also a matter of how the larger displacement and the two extra cylinders helps get you up to speed while under load. It may even help on the downhill stretches with engine braking — and you can see how well the truck accelerates and maintains control descending the mountain while towing a 5,000-pound load in the video below.
Without giving too much away, here’s a hint: You may be surprised by both the uphill and downhill results!
