We Bought a New HD Diesel Truck! But Which One: Chevy Silverado 2500HD or Ford F-250 Tremor?

For you folks who have been watching our videos and supporting the team for years (thank you for that!), you likely know the drill when it comes to long-term vehicles in the TFL fleet. We buy a certain truck, spend the next little while running every conceivable test we can with it, then rotate it out by either trading it in or selling it for the next truck in line. We’re at that point once again, as it’s time to move on from our long-term 2022 Ram 2500 Big Horn.
If you missed that — here’s a host of videos on “Trailhound” if you need a refresher — we originally bought that truck in February of 2022, and spent the next few months creating our idea of the best (affordable) overlanding truck. After about three years and 30,000 miles on the clock, though, we’ve done virtually everything we could do that you all would watch. Because of your continued support, we also have a quandary in that, for tax reasons, we need to pick up a new HD truck by the end of the year.
But which HD truck should we buy? That’s the burning question as Andre and Roman go shopping, which you can check out in the video below. The choice ultimately boiled down to two diesel-powered replacements for the Ram 2500: the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Trail Boss or the Ford F-250 Tremor. Like the Ram, we needed to pick up a truck that was a capable off-roader.
“But why didn’t you just buy another Ram?”, we know some folks will ask. Apart from the fact we just had one, the updated Ram HD models are not coming until 2025, and we need to purchase a new truck on this side of the new year (before December 31, 2024).
Of course, knowing the pricing trends with trucks these days, neither truck is going to be what you’d call “cheap”. Nevertheless, both options we’re looking at through two dealers we frequently work with — Brighton Ford and Johnson Auto Plaza in Brighton, Colorado (obligatory shout-out) — are well-equipped trucks, so the idea isn’t necessarily to repeat the process we went through with the Ram. As for MSRPs: The 2025 Ford F-250 Lariat Tremor we’re looking at comes in at $91,485, while the 2025 Chevy Silverado is $78,569.
If you’re shopping your own heavy-duty truck, however, there is an important consideration. Most dealers are dealing right now, so you won’t have to pay those eye-watering MSRPs. You can at least get a few thousand dollars off (as indeed we did with our purchase), with each respective dealer marking the F-250’s price down to a more tolerable $85,173 and the Silverado 2500HD’s price to $75,639. If you’re buying a 2024 model, you can almost certainly save thousands beyond that.
Here’s which truck we ended up buying (and the details for both):
